My Farm: My Experience - Wumtea

 Hello! My name is Wumtea AbdulRazak, also known as Naanuna or Golden, the founder of Our Rabbit Farm, located in Weija in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. I am an accountant by profession.



I started rabbitry in 2018 with 3 does (female) and a buck (male).


I had the inspiration to start animal farming from two special people in my life. Abdul Salaam Fuseini (C.E.O of Mbë Suglo Rabbit, East Legon), he made rabbitry 'sexy'. His branding was on point. My earlier fear was whether there is market for rabbit, because then I thought the meat was unpopular, but because Mbë Suglo is practising value Addition (VA), I was inspired and assured that demand outweigh supply. Mr Lewis Emmanuel Tenkorang (C.E.O of X farms, Weija) actually set me up. Mentored me from scratch to date. 



Alhamdulilah! I started with 4 rabbits, since then I do not remembered buying even bunny but today I had more than 80 stock of rabbits. I have sold more than 80 meat rabbits and 20 to other Farmers for breeding.



What makes success story interesting are the challenges that it comes with.

Though I do experience numerous challenges, the few that I could remember are:

1. Day to day management of the farm. I think I have not gotten to the stage to hire additional hands as I believe my farm is still young. I found it so difficult taking care of my farm. Sweeping in the morning and evening, coupled with my formal job. It is not easy.


2. Fear of diseases. Sometimes you wake up and found dead rabbit in your cage, not just once, not twice not even thrice, many times. It sometimes Scarry. At a point, I nearly called it a quit but I never gave up.

My future plans is to moved Our Rabbit Farm to an ultra modern rabbitry.

Farmer Brown Family Garden

 Farmer Brown is a household name in the rabbit industry not only Ghana but Africa as a whole. Most of us thought he farms only rabbit, Farmer Brown is a complete Farmer. Read the following work from Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity. The farmer Brown family garden is about 600m2. and is maintained by Adotei Brown, popularly known as Farmer Brown, his wife, and their two children. The garden is cultivated with peppers intercropped with noni plants, cocoyams, and cassava. Rabbit manure is used to fertilize the soil. Peppers harvested from the garden are sold on the market and also for home consumption. Excess peppers are sundried for preservation. The cocoyam leaves locally known as kontomire are harvested and used in the preparation of vegetable stew. This stew is usually eaten with the boiled tubers of the cocoyam.
