My Farm: My Experience - Michael Codjoe

Michael Codjoe is my name a member of GARFA -Greater Accra Rabbit Farmers Association- and the founder of (Name of farm) located at Legon in Accra. Aside rabbitry, I also do other stuff like snail, grasscutter and mango farming, and ICT.

I first ventured into rabbit farming about twenty (25) years ago when I was in Secondary School. Around that time I did not have any training in farming.

It was just a hobby with no profit motive.

My Current business started three years ago.

Doe Unit

I started 3 years ago and currently have a 26 Doe Unit backyard farm.

My motivation for Venturing Into Rabbit Farming is for the fact that rabbitry fetches a lot of returns apart from the love for farming that I do have.

Businesses

1. I presently sell breeding stock and dressed rabbits.

2. I buy and sell rabbit urine and manure.

3. Design and install J Feeders

4. Sell and Install Nipple watering system

Challenges

1. I initially had issues with Cocci in 2019 and bloat in 2020. But these challenges have been summounted.

2. My major challenge now is making the process of waste collection easier.

Successes

1. I use my own formulated feed.

2. About 80 percent of my animals are fed using J feeders I installed myself

3. All my rabbits use nipples watering system

4. I do not have issues with disposing of waste as I sell the urine and the manure

Research Initiatives

With my engineering background I am looking at automating the feeding and waste collection processes

I am also investigating how to use available agro waste for feeding the animals on a commercial scale.

Future Plans

I have the following plans

1. Opening a grilling place

2. Expanding the farm to 60 Doe unit

Assistance and Collaboration

1. I wish to learn/ collaborate with other farmers on how to formulate cost effective feed

2. I wish to learn how to manage Human resource on the farm

3. Looking forward to get/ buy the best breeds from fellow farmers

The GARFA Dream

I wish to help GARFA become a well resourced and structured organization.

An Association that will be a reference point for rabbit farming in Africa.

To wind up,rabbit farming is a good business venture.

It can help alleviate poverty and provides the needed protein for the family.

I am looking forward to expanding the business to train others and collaborate with others to make rabbit farming a lucrative business.

I wish you will be my business partner.
